Bears! Release Party Blowout!

Posted on

Wednesday the 28th we threw a party to celebrate the official release of Bears! We gathered at Wonko’s Toys and Games in Austin and began giving out cake and goody bags filled with assorted bear survival items. The cake was Bear themed of course, with a sleeping camper on top and lots of dice around the edges.

Before we could finish slicing the first piece, it was time to start rolling some dice. One game of Bears! quickly turned into two, which became three, and before you know it we had the entire store filled with people rolling dice and running for their lives. One of the great things about Bears! is how easy it is to teach. As soon as we had finished one round, the players who had just learned the game were explaining it to new players who just walked up. It’s a good thing we brought more demo copies!

Anne-Marie runs a group through their first game and another group of players dives in.

At 8:00 it was time to start the first ever Bears! tournament. We gathered all the players around the biggest table in the store, and after combining several sets and filling the box full of dice, we were ready to go. It was a 12-player game, which is the current Guinness World Record for Largest Game of Bears!* It turns out that Bears! gets more fun the more people you add, and a dozen people fighting to grab a bunch of dice is pretty fun to watch. After a few tense round endings and some close calls, the winner (by reaching 100 points first) was Edgar Fisher. As a reward for all his hard work, he walked away with not just a sense of pride but also a free copy of Bears!

Left: This is what a 12 player game of Bears! looks like. Right: Dave on the left is psyched for his big score, but once Anne-Marie tallies it up, she's going to have to tell him that Edgar, on the right, just won.

The celebration wound down with a few more pieces of cake and a few final games, but too soon the night was over. Check out the great video below of the whole night. If you missed out on this event, we’ll be holding another release party after The Wizard’s Tower (our first Castle Panic expansion) comes out, so stay tuned for more details on that as they become available!

In the meantime, if you’re going to be in the San Antonio area, you can come play demos of all our games on Saturday, October 8th, as part of our San Antonio Demo Day at the Dragon’s Lair. We’ll be there from 4:00 to 10:00, and there will be another Bears! tournament at 9:00 with another chance to win a free copy!

*No such record actually exists. We just made that up.
