It’s still hard to believe it’s only been a year since Castle Panic came out, but last Sunday was the official day of our One Year Celebration.
We threw our party at Dragon’s Lair Comics and Fantasy here in Austin where they’ve always been big fans of ours. It was great to get back to the store in an official sense, and this was the first time I’d been in since the big reorganization of their floor space. They’ve added a lot more tables and places to play which makes an already great store an even better place to spend the day.
We had a special area reserved for us and we set up all our assorted bits and pieces. When 2:00 came around we were all set up and ready to go. Good thing too, since the fans were right on time.
Our goody bags were over on the left, the last of our Gen Con T-shirts were available on the right and the cake of course, went right up front.
And what a cake it was.
I teased you before the party that we were going to have a special cake at this event and even though Anne-Marie knew what was coming, it was still something else to see the finished creation in person. First off it was huge. This thing was about 3 feet across and weighed a ton. Then there’s the fact that everything you see here is edible. Yep, the towers, the walls, the grounds and even the trees and Giant Boulder were all 100% delicious.
The cake’s creator was pretty excited about the prospect of making a cake for our game, but not as excited as we were to tear into it. I barely managed to get this shot of the cake from above showing off how it even has our 3 colored areas in it. But that’s not the best part. They weren’t just colorful decorations, they were different flavors too, Strawberry for Red, Blueberry for Blue and Lime for Green. And yes, you probably could have played a game on the cake, but that would have made a real mess.
Once all the “oohing” and “aahing” over the cake wrapped up we got on with the festivities. We had tournament games running non stop with new players, and experienced pros all working for the defense of their castles and the glory of high points. One of our first games went down to defeat, but soon afterwards we started getting some scores on our leaderboard.
The funny thing about seeing someone else’s score above yours is it immediately calls for a rematch! We had several games that were purely for points which are always a fun challenge as you try to score as much as you can without sacrificing too many towers. The goody bags flew off the table and the cake was quickly sliced up and served as the crowds grew. We kept the games going and I got to meet several long-time fans and even make a few new ones.
Eventually it was time to check the leaderboard and award our “fabulous prizes” to our top scoring Master Slayers and teams. Just like at Gen Con, we were having too much fun at our awards ceremony to take pictures, so you’ll just have to take my word for it that it was a blast. Dragon’s Lair ended up selling every copy of our game they had and no one went home without a fistful of goodies and a belly full of cake.
Our thanks to the staff at Dragon’s Lair and to all the fans, old and new, that came out to help us celebrate this milestone. It’s been an amazing first year and we can’t wait to show you what we have in store for next year and beyond. Thanks for going on this journey with us.
