Justin’s Interview on the We’re Not Wizards Podcast

Black and white hexagon with a line drawing of a wizard's wand crossed out.

Justin recently sat down (virtually) with Richard for a fun chat on the We’re Not Wizards podcast.

They discussed the thermodynamics of tea, what kind of kid Justin was growing up, selling games in today’s market, and “squeaky bum” moments. It really is all that and a bag of chips, or “crisps” rather.

You can listen to the podcast on the player above, or visit We’re Not Wizards to hear all the shenanigans for yourself.

Castle Panic Boardgaming Tour of Scotland

Posted on 1 Comment
Blair Castle

In cooperation with RPG Travel, we are thrilled to announce the Castle Panic Boardgaming Tour of Scotland to launch the second edition of Castle Panic. Join us October 9-16, 2022 to sightsee and play board games in castles and other venues throughout Scotland. One stop that we are particularly excited about is Duarte Castle, home of Clan MacLean, from which Justin descended. Games will include the Castle Panic Deluxe Collection and a giant version of the second edition of Castle Panic. The full itinerary may be viewed below.

To join the tour, you can sign up by clicking here or below. If 30 travelers sign up, the price per person will be reduced by $350. We hope you can make it. It’s going to be so fun!

Day 1 (October 10, Monday) – The group will arrive mid-morning into Edinburgh airport. Meet your guide and proceed into central Edinburgh. On arrival, there will be a guided panoramic tour of this amazing city featuring Old and New Towns and the Royal Mile. Later this afternoon, there will be a ‘City of the Dead’ walking tour of Edinburgh Old Town followed by a visit to the famous Edinburgh Castle (guided tour on the outside). Enjoy a group dinner at the hotel restaurant.

Day 2 (October 11, Tuesday) – Enjoy a morning gaming session at The Caves, a truly unique venue that makes up the substructure of the 18th century South Bridge. There was once so much Scottish whiskey stored here that it became known as ‘Whisky Row.’ Non-gamers will experience a visit to a traditional farm, tasting local cheeses, pastries and participate in a hands-on lunch experience. Afterwards, enjoy afternoon tea time at a local and intimate restaurant. Later in the evening, attend the ‘Taste of Scotland’ dinner show at the Prestonfield Stables. Experience a night of Scottish music, dancing and entertainment.

Day 3 (October 12, Wednesday) – After breakfast at the hotel, enjoy free time for sightseeing and shopping in the city this morning. The group will meet around late morning and drive to Stirling for some free time and lunch in the town of Stirling. Next head to the Wallace Monument to take a self guided walking tour, followed by a private tour of Stirling Castle, one of Scotland’s grandest castles. You will also learn about Wallace Monument which stands facing Stirling and is the location of the Stirling Bridge. Afterwards, enjoy dinner, gaming and drinks in the castle. Gaming will begin again after dinner.

Day 4 (October 13, Thursday) – Depart for a full day excursion to the scenic region of the Highlands. This is the largest region of Scotland of nearly 10,000 square miles which includes the UK’s highest mountains and the beautiful Loch Ness. In this region, you will visit Blair Castle (self-guided tour), known to be the home to 19 generations of Stewarts and Murrays of Atholl. Also experience a whisky distillery for a tour and tasting. There will be a gaming session in Blair Castle as well.

Day 5 (October 14, Friday) – After breakfast, depart the hotel and travel to the Isle of Mull today. This isle of over 338 square miles with the highest peak at 3,169 feet. Take the ferry from Oban to Craignure. On arrival, travel to Duart Castle for a guided tour followed by lunch at a nearby restaurant. Duart Castle is a 14th-century keep that sits atop a rock face at the end of a peninsula. It’s also the home of Clan MacLean, which is Justin’s ancestral clan. In the afternoon, enjoy a gaming session in Duart Castle! Return by ferry to Oban and check in to your hotel.

Day 6 (October 15, Saturday) – Depart hotel this morning and drive south via Loch Lomond and then to Glasgow. Loch Lomond is a beautiful freshwater loch surrounded by beautiful hills and is part of The Trossachs National Park. Enjoy some free time in Glasgow, known for its Victorian architecture and vibrant art scene, for independent sightseeing or shopping before continuing to the airport hotel for your last evening in Scotland and gaming session. Farewell group dinner this evening.

Day 7 (October 16, Sunday) – Spend the morning at your leisure before heading to the airport for your return flight back to the U.S., arriving on the same day.

International Games Week

IGW-logo

IGW-logo

For a few years now the American Library Association has put together a huge gaming event called International Games Week. The idea is simple. Get people to play games and use the local library as a great community space to do it! This year, Fireside Games is going to be participating here in our great town of Austin.

The event runs from November 4th through the 10th, but Justin and Anne-Marie will be spending this Saturday, November 10th at the Austin Central Library (the one with the 37 foot tall Grackle inspired sculpture!) running free demos of a bunch of games.

The Library is at 710 W. César Chávez St. and the gaming will be all the way up on the 6th floor. The event goes from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and our friends from Steve Jackson Games will be there as well, so there’s really no reason not to come join the fun.

If you’re looking for an event in your neck of the woods, check out the ALA’s website, where they have information about all the goings on. In addition, here’s a great map that shows all the libraries around the world that will be participating in IGW!

International Games Day Map 2018

Can’t make it out to a library, or there isn’t an event near you? Not to worry. ALA has you covered with an entire page full of links to FREE Print-and-play games! Give your printer and your scissors a workout and you can get in on the fun as well.

No matter how you celebrate it, we hope you have a great time spreading the awesomeness that is board gaming during International Games Week!

Wizard World Comic Con Austin!

Posted on Leave a comment
Wizard World TV

Last weekend was Wizard World Comic Con Austin, and it was a great show!

We arrived on Thursday to set up our booth and were immediately put in a good mood. The Austin Convention Center is what’s known as a “Drive-On” show, which means they allow vendors to drive their vehicles right onto the show floor to load and unload. Since we usually have to transport all of our booth materials into a show from parking lots that are far away, we really appreciate this. Boy does being able to park the van right next to the booth make setup easy!

Setup at Wizard World Comic Con

Wizard World Booth Ready

The show started on Friday afternoon, and we immediately got to work showing people all the fun to be had with cats, airships, and spaceships. Comic Cons are known for lots of amazing costumes, cosplay, and crazy creatures, and Austin was no exception. The aisles were filled with bow-tied Doctors, Harley Quinns, Stormtroopers, and more. We managed to grab a few photos of some of our favorites, including this amazing rendition of Khan.

Wizard World Khan
See more at http://bit.ly/2d4tefv

We also fell in love with/were terrified by this father and son Predator duo.

Wizard World Predators
Did you notice what he’s holding?

Of course, another big draw to a Comic Con is the chance to meet all sorts of celebrities from movies, TV, books, and all corners of the geek universe. This show featured Sebastian Shaw (The Winter Solider), Bruce Campbell, and tons of other famous faces. We’ll admit you don’t get into the board game hobby without being a bit of a geek yourself, and we weren’t going to miss the opportunity to meet some of our favorites. Since we just happened to have Star Trek Panic with us, and William Shatner was at the show (coincidence?), we had to get a photo taken of all of us.

Wizard World Shatner

He was super nice, and it was great to meet the man behind the Captain in person after all these years!

He even autographed a copy of the game.

Signed Star Trek Panic

There were two more guests that I was especially excited to see. If you saw the TableTop episode featuring Castle Panic, you might remember Yuri Lowenthal and Tara Platt being pretty darn entertaining. Well, they were at the show this weekend, and I can confirm that they are also pretty darn nice people! Not only did they happily sign my copy of Castle Panic, but we chatted for a few minutes. I learned they still play the game at home, and I even got to hug Yuri. It was pretty awesome!

Wizard World Signed Castle Panic

I now have signatures from 3 of the 4 players on the Castle Panic TableTop episode on 1 cover. All I need is Andre the Black Nerd, and I’ll have the complete set!

I took a side trip to get my album cover to the original Flash Gordon soundtrack signed by Flash Gordon himself, Sam Jones! Hey, it can’t ALL be about work, right?

Flash! A-aaaaah!

It turns out that we even made a (very) short appearance on the local morning news show when they did a feature on the convention. How cool is that?!

Wizard World TV

We met tons of great people at the show and had a blast introducing people to our hobby. If it sounds like something you’d like to experience for yourself, there is probably a Comic Con coming to a city near you. Check out their complete schedule here, and let your geek flag fly. Trust us, it’s worth it!

The Dark Titan Wins Origins Award!

Origins Game Fair was last week and it was a blast! We had a booth in the Main Exhibit Hall and ran demos of Here, Kitty, Kitty!, Dastardly Dirigibles (releasing July 6), and Star TrekTM Panic® (available now!). Our booth was so busy and we got to see so many familiar faces and make some new friends.

We had the designer of Here, Kitty, Kitty! in the booth playing with attendees and the artist, Tony Steele, was back in the art area drawing cats on boxes for anyone who picked up a copy and asked nicely.

Star TrekTM Panic® received lots of attention and we had demo after demo of excited gamers devouring the latest variation in the Panic Line.

PanicDay-Web-Slider

Saturday of the show happened to coincide with International Panic Day and it was fun to see Social Media explode with posts from Friendly Local Game Stores around the country hosting events in-store to celebrate the day, while we played the latest variation with attendees at the show.

The biggest thrill of the show was at the Origins Awards ceremony Saturday night when it was revealed The Dark Titan, the second expansion to Castle Panic®, was the winner of the Fan Favorite award for the Gaming Accessory category! Thanks fans!

Anne-Marie De Witt, our CEO, accepted the award on behalf of Fireside Games because Justin De Witt, the designer and Chief Creative Officer for the company, was back at home in Texas working on the THIRD expansion. You can expect more news on that game to be coming VERY SOON!

Castle Panic and the first expansion, The Wizard’s Tower, were both Origins Awards Nominees in their respective release years, so you know the whole line is good. Fans really love the toughness of Agranok in The Dark Titan and we appreciate all the support and dedication to this line you, the fans, bring every time you see us at a show or a local game store.

Thanks to all of you for making Origins Game Fair 2016 such a success and so much fun. We’ll see you there next year. And remember… Just PANIC and Play Games!

As Seen on TV! Orphan Black

Orphan Black logo

If you are a fan of Orphan Black, you may have recognized a few familiar “faces” in the new Season 4 set location, Rabbit Hole Comics.

In episode 2, “Transgressive Border Crossing,” formerly separated clones Sarah and Cosima are reunited in a secret lab in the basement of a Comic shop. When Sarah and Mrs. S enter the shop we get a good little “geek out” when they pan the shop and there is an eye-catching display of our favorite games.

We caught this quick picture to show off a little. Forgive our proud little hearts. :)

Games shown: Bears!, Castle Panic: The Wizard’s Tower expansion, Castle Panic: The Dark Titan expansion. You can even see a bit of Bloodsuckers and The Village Crone if you look closely!
